Time Management for Busy Moms

The following post is from Amanda of OhAmanda.com and Impress Your Kids:

productivity

This is the life of a mom.

It’s full of teeny tiny little events, activities and chores that fill up a day even before it starts. Most of these things seem insignificant, mundane and usually never-ending. We fill up our days with wiping counters, finding lost shoes and reading bedtime stories. In between breaths and during naps, we check email, update our Facebook and maybe even grab a cup of coffee.

productivity

But what about the important things of our day?

What about the big events? The big projects? The big priorities? Big rocks like: reading to your kids every day, being attentive to your husband, spending quiet time with your Bible or keeping your body healthy with food and exercise? Will they fit into our lives when we are overrun with all the little things?

productivity

Hardly.

In fact, as mothers we generally spend more time focused on others—school schedules, husband’s work and kids’ activities. And our big priorities? Our big rocks? An afterthought. An I-hope-this-happens-one-day.

productivity

But what would happen if you put those rocks in first?

What if you got up early and read your Bible? What if you stopped fretting about spotless floors and spent time playing ball with your kids? What if you shut the computer during breakfast and talked about your kids’ day? What would happen to all those little things that “have to” get done?

rocks jar

They’d fall into place. You’d have room to spare.

My pastor, Andy Stanley says, “Priority determines capacity.” I know, as a mom, I don’t have time for time management! But I do have time for priorities. I do have time to do the important. I do have time to focus on the good, big, significant things.

For me? My big rocks? Emptying the dishwasher before breakfast is done. Being awake enough to spend an hour or two paying attention to my husband before I fall into bed. Reading my Bible before the kids wake up. Taking a shower and getting dressed before breakfast.

And when I do those things, I find myself empowered to tackle more big rocks while still fitting in as many of the little rocks (Facebook, blogging, girls’ nights out and wandering through Target) as I want.

Spend a few minutes today identifying your big rocks. Then start putting them into your life’s jar first. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to see your life’s capacity expand!

What are your big rocks? Do you make room for them on most days?

Amanda is a stay-at-home mom of two who blogs at OhAmanda.com and Impress Your Kids. In her former life, Amanda was a Children’s Pastor — overseeing, organizing and developing ministry for kids in nursery through middle school, but now that she is a mom, her “skills” are used up on her kids!

Excellent advice!! I never really thought about it this way before… I can think of many, many “big rocks” I haven’t tackled because it feels like they’ll overflow that jar… what a great, concrete image of another approach. Thanks for sharing…

Hmm, I’ve used this type of example for teaching Time Management to people (except with sugar, oreo cookies and mini-wheats) but I’ve never applied it to my mothering in this way before. Thanks for making me think about it this way. :)

Fabulous post! Too many times the little stuff crowds out the important things in life. For me, I have to consciously choose and plan to get the big rocks taken care of first. They don’t just naturally get the attention they deserve.

Thank you for this reminder! I have seen in many times in corporate america, but I recently entered a new era of my life working from home. While I have no little ones at home, I do still have responsibilities. I need to make sure I get my big rocks in first, and ones that I have been neglecting are prayer and time with God each morning. I wonder if “that’s” why I have been having a tough time?!?

Excellent post! Thank you for the reminder. It is so true about letting all the little things fill up our time. The biggest rock for me right now is to determine what my big rocks should be. We really must take the time to review where we are in life and what our priorities should be. Perhaps I should go fill a jar with split peas or lentils or something and leave it on the counter as a reminder.

    • Mandi

Great reminder, Marcia! Taking time to focus and think about our vision and priorities IS a priority!

I really love this post – the pictures just bring the point home!

I agree that sometimes my big rock can be determining what my big rocks *are* but I agree that the days I have my priorities right I can tell because things do just seem to fall into place. But the days those little rocks sidetrack me? Not so much …

Terrific reminder and great post for use visual learners :-)

Thanks for posting! This is SO true and people really do make time for things that need to get done! For me, it’s working out everyday. Sometimes while working out, I feel bad I’m not at home cleaning, cooking, or playing with the kids, but then I remember that I need to take time for myself, because in the end, it makes for a better mom and wife.

I listened to this sermon of Andy Stanley’s a few weeks back and thought it was a wonderful reminder of putting what truly matters into our lives first, otherwise we end up filling our time with the inconsequential stuff. Thanks for sharing.

In Greece women still cook from scratch almost everything. And so do I, during the week I usually cook dishes from the greek cuisine but on the weekends I try something different like italian lasagna or french coqu-au-vin or indian curries…you get the idea…
Large family gatherings happen really often but as I get older I tend to enjoy more smaller friendly dinners
My favorite foods include lots of vegetables and are usually soups.
The most intimidating are desserts, cakes, etc. I never know if I’ll produce something eatable!

  • http://overcomingbusy.com/ OvercomingBusy

I love to cook. During the summer, it is simple fare from the grill and garden. Now that fall is here, its more comfort foods. I usually try at least one new recipe a week – or at least tweak a previously used one. Luckily, my family will eat about anything!

  • http://www.theunemployedlibrarian.blogspot.com Elizabeth L.

I love to cook! I cook mostly from scratch, but I do take advantage of pre-packaged things from the store, especially on nights when I know I’m going to be tired or when we have a lot going on. I bake exclusively from scratch; we don’t eat any store bought bread products.

I love to try new recipes, especially for Italian or French dishes, which are my favorite cuisines.

I always buy them for my cameras and printers. I have used my warranties on both items more that once. In one case I received a new printer upgraded to a better model because they could not fix it. As for the cameras they came in handy when my children drop them or the shutter gets messed up.

  • JennaM

These are such great tips! I’ve definitely struggled with the napping late in the afternoon (or even in the evening… oops) and not getting to bed on time. Trying so hard to work on this. Thanks for this!

The steam tent over the sink works wonderfully for me! I especially like this trick because I can do it even if I’m sick away from home, for instance in a hotel, where I don’t have as much choice of food. I carry a small bottle of peppermint essential oil (with childproof cap, it doesn’t leak) in my toiletry kit so that if I need a steam tent, I can add a drop of mint to enhance the effect. Eucalyptus oil works well for this too, but I don’t like the smell as much! I put the oil on the sink drain plug immediately after plugging it so that it mixes into the hot water as the sink fills.

I haven’t tried garlic in the ears, but eating RAW garlic seems to help me fight off illness or, especially, prevent a cold from turning into a sinus infection. I mix it into my serving of spaghetti or beans or soup, or spread it on toast with coconut oil which also is supposed to fight infection.

  • Lizabeth

    Great reminders Katie!
I use the salt water too. And the garlic oil for the ears. In fact my twin girls both have an ear infection right now and last night I started garlic oil. They smelled like little “scampi’s” last night! I am, however, also giving the antibiotic this time because 1. they are only 13 months old and 2. have had a fever for 3 days. They were also the most pathetic little things all day yesterday when their fevers were the highest. I also put them on probiotics, elderberry syrup and CLO, just to cover all the bases!

  • Andie

Thanks for the hints Katie, I am a big fan of garlic, gargling with salt water, and cider vinegar, but you added a few more ideas. I am going to make a list and post it right away like you suggest!

A squirt of breastmilk into an ear will deaden the pain immediately and clear the infection within two days. They still do this in Colombia. My husband was 15 for his last ear infection that was cured by his aunt :)

  • susan

I’ll have to try the cinnamon and honey. I’ve been using raw garlic and honey at the first sign of illness (pressed 10 minutes before ingesting) and it seems to work nicely. The honey makes it really easy to take (especially for my two-year-old).

I also love to make a tea of ginger, honey, and lemon. I buy a lot of ginger at a time, peel it and mince it in my food processor, and then freeze it. That way I always have it on hand. I just pour boiling water over about a tbsp or two of the frozen ginger and let it steep until it’s cool enough to drink. At that point I add lemon and raw honey. Actually, I woke up this morning feeling on the verge of a cold, and this concoction seemed to knock it out within a half hour. (coincidence? perhaps. But it tasted pretty darn good and put some extra fluids into my body, so it certainly didn’t hurt.)

That’s an awesome story! We just started taking fermented cod liver oil (with both Vits A and D) with that goal in mind, but we haven’t actually gotten tested for D levels. That would be kind of neat, to see empirically that what we’re doing is having an impact… Thank you for sharing! :) Katie

Just a quick comment – I have a natural health practitioner who reads my regular blog, and she commented a few weeks ago that taking essential oils, especially oregano, orally is like using a bulldozer to knock down a cardboard box. I guess you’re supposed to just inhale them, not take orally. ??? That’s just uninformed me sharing what I heard… :) Katie

  • elizabeth

We’ll second the oregano oil trick, although I won’t use anything but Oreganol brand. 2-3 drops, 2-3 times a day… I can’t remember ever getting sick if we have consistently dosed with Oreganol at the first sign of oncoming illness. The other plus is how well it travels – just a 1oz bottle!

I’ve been thinking this one over, and I’m torn. I mean, we talk to our kids or our husband while we drive, right? Is it really different to talk on a hands-free phone? I’m not arguing — really trying to think it through!

I’ve heard this as well, and that you can even add a little garlic to it
for an extra oomph, but it’s always good to have a firsthand testimonial
from someone who’s used it! Thanks for sharing!
